Orchestra Travel: Orlando

Magic in Every Measure

Why Orlando for Orchestras?

Professional musicians are working all over Orlando in ways students may never have considered. Theme parks rely on players who can sight-read quickly and perform with consistency while adapting to live entertainment and tightly produced shows. For young string players it opens up a completely different picture of what a professional music career can look like beyond the concert hall.

Orlando lets students see that world up close and then step into it themselves through performance opportunities and workshops built around entertainment and storytelling. They can learn from working professionals and hear how orchestral skills translate into an industry built around live experiences. It turns the trip into proof that serious musicianship can be part of the places students already love.

Performance Possibilities

Disney Springs Waterside Stage

Disney Springs Waterside Stage

Take the orchestra onto a real Disney stage in the heart of Disney Springs. For a little while students get to step into the entertainment world they have spent years watching from the audience and become part of the experience themselves. Performing for guests in that setting gives the concert an energy that feels completely different from anything they can recreate back home.

Universal CityWalk Lagoon Stage

Universal CityWalk Lagoon Stage

Perform right in the middle of Universal CityWalk with the energy of the resort all around the orchestra. Guests stop as they pass and students get to feel what it is like to become part of the entertainment rather than simply visiting it. The setting makes the performance feel exciting before the first note is played.

OrlandoFest

OrlandoFest

OrlandoFest gives the orchestra a serious musical goal inside a Universal-centered trip. Students perform for experienced adjudicators and receive an on-stage clinic while the experience pairs naturally with time at Universal Orlando. It gives directors the feedback and musical growth they want without asking students to give up the destination they are excited about.

SeaWorld SoundWaves

SeaWorld SoundWaves

Perform inside SeaWorld and make the concert part of the park experience. SoundWaves gives student orchestras a chance to play for an audience beyond their own families while enjoying the energy of one of Orlando’s major attractions. Students get a true destination performance and then spend the rest of the day experiencing the park together.

Music USA at Universal Orlando

Music USA at Universal Orlando

Step onto Soundstage 33 at Universal Orlando for a festival experience built around performance. Orchestras receive adjudication and an on-stage clinic in a setting connected directly to the entertainment industry around them. A professional recording gives students something tangible to take home from the experience.

Music in the Parks

Music in the Parks

Give the orchestra a festival goal while keeping the trip centered on Universal Orlando. Groups perform for adjudication at a nearby venue and then head into the parks for the rest of the experience. The awards celebration brings everyone back together and gives students a fun finish to a day built around both music and the destination.

Festival Disney

Festival Disney

Bring the orchestra into one of the best-known student music festival settings in Orlando. Festival Disney gives ensembles the option to perform competitively or noncompetitively and pairs adjudication with a personalized clinic. Students get serious feedback inside a Disney experience that already feels special before they ever take the stage.

Orlando Heritage Festival

Orlando Heritage Festival

Turn the trip into a full festival experience with a performance designed for student ensembles. Orchestras receive adjudication and feedback while sharing the event with other school groups from around the country. The festival adds a clear musical goal to the trip while still leaving plenty of room for everything students came to Orlando to enjoy.

Clinics & Workshops

Disney Soundtrack Sessions: Instrumental

Step into the role of a professional studio musician with a Disney teaching artist leading the session. Students sight-read exclusive Disney arrangements and rehearse with the speed and focus expected in a recording environment. They work on the same fundamentals directors reinforce at home while discovering how phrasing and dynamics change the emotion of a scene. The payoff comes when students watch their own recorded performance synced with Disney film footage.

Universal Sound Design: Music & the Art of Foley

Show students just how much sound controls what an audience experiences on screen. Orchestra musicians perform underscore while the group also explores Foley and the creation of sound effects for film. Music and sound are then connected to picture so students can see how timing and performance choices completely change a scene. It is a hands-on introduction to an entertainment career that many young musicians have never considered.

Disney Music in Storytelling

Take the lesson out into the park and explore why the music around students is there in the first place. Disney teaching artists help students listen differently as they examine how music creates emotion and supports the story of an immersive environment. Instead of simply hearing background music at EPCOT students begin noticing how composers and entertainment professionals use sound to shape the way guests experience a place.

Festival Disney Clinic

Perform for a panel that includes nationally recognized collegiate music educators and a Disney professional teaching artist. The orchestra receives written and recorded comments before moving directly into an individualized clinic while the performance is still fresh. Directors can choose a competitive or noncompetitive experience so the focus can be on achievement or simply getting excellent feedback from musicians students would not normally encounter.

star-icon

OrlandoFest Festival Clinic

The clinic begins with the orchestra’s own festival performance. Experienced adjudicators listen to the ensemble and one of them then comes onto the stage to work directly with students on what they just heard. That immediate connection between performing and fixing something in real time can make the feedback much more useful than comments students read days later. OrlandoFest packages the experience with Universal Orlando so the musical work fits naturally into the trip students already want to take.

OrlandoFest Custom Workshop

Skip the competition and build a 90-minute session around what your orchestra actually needs. OrlandoFest can customize the workshop by educational goal so directors can use the time to tackle repertoire or strengthen a particular area of the ensemble. It gives the group more time with a professional clinician than the shorter festival clinic and keeps the focus squarely on improving the orchestra.

Orlando Heritage AIM Masterclass

Start the festival with a private 60-to-90-minute masterclass designed around your ensemble. A professional clinician works with students before they perform so they have time to make changes and then put those ideas into practice on the festival stage. After the performance they receive feedback from three adjudicators and another on-stage clinic. It creates a full coaching cycle instead of making adjudication the end of the experience.

Music USA On-Stage Clinic

Perform inside Universal Orlando’s Soundstage 33 and then stay on stage to work with the professionals who just heard the orchestra. Music USA combines adjudication with a personalized clinic so students can immediately revisit passages and respond to the feedback they received. The soundstage setting also puts the experience inside the entertainment world surrounding them rather than in a typical school festival venue.

Orlando Philharmonic Musician Workshop

Bring professional orchestral musicians into the educational side of the trip through a customized session with the Orlando Philharmonic. Their education programs can bring individual musicians or ensembles directly to students with experiences designed to strengthen a school music program. Students get to ask questions and work at close range with musicians who make their living in a professional orchestra. It brings the Orlando music industry back to the instrument in their hands.

Beyond the Stage

When students hear Orlando the excitement is already there. Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando can fill entire days with attractions and immersive worlds they already know by name. SeaWorld adds another completely different park experience. With Epic Universe now open there is even more reason for students to be counting down long before departure. The musical side of the trip does not have to compete with the fun here. It becomes part of the adventure they were already excited to take.

Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World

The words Walt Disney World usually do half the selling before the trip is even announced. Groups have four completely different theme parks to choose from. Magic Kingdom delivers the classic Disney experience while EPCOT brings global culture and some of Disney’s biggest new attractions. Hollywood Studios puts students inside Star Wars and other movie worlds. Animal Kingdom mixes major rides with wildlife and the incredible setting of Pandora. The hard part may be deciding which parks make the itinerary.

Universal Orlando Resort

Universal Orlando Resort

Universal can easily fill several days now. Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure give students the movie worlds and major thrill rides that made the resort famous. Epic Universe adds an entirely new full-day park where students can walk into SUPER NINTENDO WORLD or explore the Ministry of Magic. Groups can choose the parks that fit the trip or turn Universal into the centerpiece of the whole Orlando experience.

SeaWorld Orlando

SeaWorld Orlando

SeaWorld can satisfy two completely different kinds of students in the same day. It now has eight roller coasters for the thrill seekers including Mako and the unusual Pipeline surf coaster. Students who would rather stay off the big rides can spend their time with dolphins and penguins or walk through the massive shark habitat. That mix makes SeaWorld much more than the animal park some teachers may remember.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

Stand beneath a Saturn V rocket and get close enough to Space Shuttle Atlantis to appreciate just how enormous it really is. The Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour takes students behind the gates of the working NASA facility where generations of American space missions began. If a launch happens to line up with the trip the entire day can become something students talk about for years.

Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach

Trade the theme parks for the Atlantic and give students a real Florida beach day. Cocoa Beach offers room to swim and relax with the laid-back feel of the Space Coast around them. It pairs naturally with Kennedy Space Center when you want one day of the trip to feel completely different from Orlando.

Cirque du Soleil: Drawn to Life

Cirque du Soleil: Drawn to Life

Watch Disney animation leave the screen and become a live Cirque du Soleil production. Acrobats move through a world built around drawing and imagination while music drives the timing of everything happening onstage. Orchestra students may find themselves watching the precision behind the spectacle just as closely as the spectacle itself.

Blue Man Group

Blue Man Group

Blue Man Group turns rhythm into a full-scale live event. Oversized percussion and custom-built instruments become part of a show driven by physical comedy and audience interaction. The result is loud and strange and incredibly fun while showing students that musicianship does not always have to look like the performances they already know.

Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament

Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament

Walk into a castle and suddenly your orchestra is screaming for a knight on horseback. The tournament unfolds around dinner with jousting and sword fights taking over the arena. It is completely over the top in exactly the way a student trip sometimes should be.

Disney Springs & Universal CityWalk

Disney Springs & Universal CityWalk

The energy does not disappear when the group leaves the parks. Disney Springs and Universal CityWalk give students lively places to eat and explore with entertainment happening around them. They work especially well when you want the evening to keep going without committing to another full attraction.

ICON Park & International Drive

ICON Park & International Drive

Get above Orlando on the 400-foot Orlando Eye and see just how enormous the destination really is. ICON Park lets groups build an outing around the view or add another attraction nearby. International Drive keeps the area buzzing long after the sun goes down.

Gatorland

Gatorland

This is Florida embracing its weird side and having a great time with it. Students can get astonishingly close to enormous alligators and see the park’s famous rare white gators. The brave ones can even fly over the breeding marsh on the Screamin’ Gator Zip Line.

Water Park Day

Water Park Day

After performances and workshops it can feel pretty great to spend a day in a swimsuit. Orlando’s water parks replace rehearsal chairs with wave pools and water slides while still delivering the scale students expect from the destination. Disney offers Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach while Universal’s Volcano Bay brings its own massive tropical world to the mix.

Ways to Shape the Trip

Score the Magic

Build the trip around Walt Disney World and let music open doors students never see on a normal vacation. Perform at Disney Springs or take part in Soundtrack Sessions with a Disney teaching artist. Add time in the parks and students get to experience both sides of Disney entertainment — as guests and as musicians.

An EPIC Adventure

Make Universal the center of the trip with a performance at CityWalk and a Sound Design workshop that shows students how music helps bring film to life. Then spend time in Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure before exploring the completely new worlds of Epic Universe.

The Orlando Festival Circuit

Build the trip around performance and let the parks become part of the celebration. Festival Disney and Orlando’s Universal-centered festivals give students a reason to prepare together before performing for adjudicators and working with experienced clinicians. The trip has a real musical goal without losing any of the excitement students expect from Orlando.

From Soundstage to Space Coast

Mix the strongest parts of Orlando into one trip without letting the theme parks take over everything. Give the orchestra a memorable performance or workshop and then spend time at Disney or Universal. Add Kennedy Space Center or Cocoa Beach and the trip suddenly feels much bigger than a park vacation.
